Eureka - the new science & environment magazine

5th October
Eureka - the new science & environment magazine

The Times has launched a new monthly magazine, called Eureka, covering science, life and the environment. The first issue is published with the paper on Thursday October 8th 2009.

The 64-page stitched magazine is the first ever launched with the weekday Times and the first dedicated monthly science magazine of any national newspaper.

Its launch reinforces News International’s commitment to invest in quality journalism and to expand the award-winning team of science, health and environment writers at The Times. Eureka will cover a wide spectrum of topics ranging from life sciences to earth sciences and from green issues to oceanography.

Its focus will be on the latest scientific developments, how and why they matter, the people behind them and solutions for the future. Each edition will carry contributions from specialist Times writers and many well-known names from the science and arts worlds, as well as striking photography and detailed graphics that will create something entirely new for the weekly newspaper market.

Commenting on the new magazine, James Harding, Editor of The Times said: "The Times has played a key role in covering science since 1785, from being the forum where Alfred Nobel, Charles Darwin and Einstein discussed ideas, to hiring our first Science
Correspondent in 1911 and the first Ocean Correspondent in 2008. In launching Eureka, we believe that many readers want a broader read about how science can transform our lives and our planet,
which demands rigorous, engaging and exceptional reporting. No other newspaper has made the
commitment to cover these subjects with as much depth and breadth as The Times.”

Over the past year, The Times has significantly increased its science and environment coverage in the paper and has an international reputation for outstanding science reporting and comment. In addition, the Science Central blog has fostered a dedicated and active scientific community online, with an average of 4,000 daily visits.

The Eureka launch is backed by a significant multimedia marketing campaign to promote the new product to its target audience.
